                                                                                      Artist Statement

I have always held immense respect for my natural surroundings, which has led me to observe more intensely in order to see more clearly. I am intrigued with the movement of a day’s light across natural surfaces and being able to capture a moment in time. Landscape serves as a powerful metaphor for inquiry, resilience, heightened awareness, and finding pathways through challenges and quests. The landscape is in perpetual motion, affected by time of day, atmospheric shifts and seasonal change. As powerful and alluring as I find landscape to be, I am captivated with the idea of taking my images into their own light, creating new spaces based upon what I’ve experienced and transforming my impressions of natural form and space, into places never before seen. Incorporating color not necessarily found in nature, heightens the intensity of the original impression. Colors fluctuate from vibrant and pulsating to those that are calm and subdued, with the intent of evoking an emotional response. The transcendence of color from the expected to the unexpected has led to questioning of the surfaces on which I paint. The flat, illusional compositions have evolved into constructed paper forms, where I tear into the surfaces and create actual spaces within and around my work. These constructions have opened possibilities concerning my use of space and allow for a freer interpretation of color and implications of highlights and shadows upon form. Recent drawings and paintings are based upon continual atmospheric shifts in higher elevations and how these shifts create an elusivity of the powerful landscape. The landscape is visible for a moment, then suddenly hidden. It never reappears the same way, which allows for visual interpretation through my work. Atmosphere is continually enveloping all that it surrounds, softly muting surfaces it plays upon for one moment, then revealing detailed glimpses of color and form, the next. Atmosphere upon landscape serves as a powerful metaphor for experiences and resulting challenges that enrich, teach and bring a new perspective. My work is always deeply bound to landscape and expressed through drawings, paintings and torn paper constuctions. Landscape is subtle and nuanced, never ceasing to captivate, allude and inspire. I am continually challenged to seek new ways to connect color, with form and space.
